Connecting clinicians and data scientists.

Bits to Breakthroughs brings clinicians, data scientists and other stakeholders together to work on questions at the intersection of health, medicine and data.

The study-a-thon is an intensive, open-science collaboration built around specific research questions, complementary expertise and useful, reproducible outcomes. It is a space to share experience, work through challenges together and find ways forward.

Scientific
Focus 2025

This year's study-a-thon focuses on sepsis and the challenges of working with observational health data, from study design and data modelling to artificial intelligence.

Microscopic view

Sepsis

Exploring specific study questions in a sepsis context, including the challenges of working with clinical data.

Causal Study Design

Looking at how causal and observational study design can help us ask better questions of real-world health data.

Data tables and charts

OMOP Data Modelling

Working with standardised health data from hospital systems to support reproducible research and analysis.

Abstract algorithm visualization

AI Model Development

Exploring AI model development and how these models can be developed and applied using OMOP-based health data.

Study-a-thon Format

A day for
working together.

The study-a-thon brings different areas of expertise into the same room and gives participants time to work through real research questions together.

Rather than simply presenting work, the format creates space for discussion, practical problem solving and the exchange of experience. The aim is to leave with a clearer understanding of the questions, the challenges and the work that can happen next.
